Bumper Repair in Cardiff
Bumper repair is the reshaping, welding and refinishing of a damaged plastic bumper so it goes back on your car rather than into a skip. Most bumpers that look finished are not, because the plastic is designed to deform and come back. A bumper hanging off its mounts puts your car off the road, and a scuffed one just nags at you every time you park. Bring it to the Rumney workshop, let Ali Hindal check the plastic type and the mounting tabs, and you get a written quote after the strip down instead of a guess from a photograph.

Can a cracked or scuffed bumper be repaired
A cracked or scuffed bumper can be repaired in most cases, because modern bumpers are thermoplastic and thermoplastic can be welded, filled and refinished. Replacement is the exception rather than the rule, which is the opposite of what you probably assumed when you first looked at the damage.
Scuffs and scrapes are the easy end. We flat the plastic back, take down any high spots from the impact, work a flexible filler over the damaged area, then prime, colour and lacquer your bumper. You will not find the repair afterwards, because there is no join to find.
Splits are more involved and still usually repairable. The crack is vee-ed out from both sides, welded with matching plastic rod, reinforced on the back face, then flatted flush on the front. The reinforcement is the part that matters to you, because a weld on the visible face alone will reopen the first time the bumper flexes in cold weather. The wider panel work that often comes with a front end shunt is on bodywork and panel repairs.
How is the repair or replace decision made
Repair or replace is decided by the mounting tabs, the plastic type and the number of separate damaged areas, not by how bad the front face looks. Your bumper with a long scrape across it is usually repairable. Your bumper with a clean face and three snapped mounting tabs often is not.
Tabs are the hidden problem. They are thin, they sit out of sight behind the wing and under the lamp, and they snap in impacts that leave almost no mark on the visible surface. A bumper refitted with broken tabs sits proud at one corner, catches wind noise at speed, and works its clips loose over the following months. Plenty of cars arrive here with a tidy bumper and a gap you could post a letter through, and the owner had no idea.
The second test is the plastic itself. Bumpers are moulded from polypropylene, ABS or a blend, and the code is stamped on the inside face. Polypropylene welds well. Some blends do not take a weld reliably at all and have to be bonded instead, which changes the method and the price. The same repair against replace logic in metal is set out in panel beating against panel replacement.
What is plastic welding and when is it used
Plastic welding joins a split bumper by melting matching plastic rod into a prepared groove, fusing the two sides into one piece rather than gluing them together. We use it whenever your bumper has split, torn at a mounting point, or lost a section we can rebuild for you.
The method matters. A groove is cut along the crack on the front, and a wider one on the back. Rod of the same plastic family is melted in from behind first, then stainless mesh or more rod reinforces the repair across the break. Only then is the front face welded, flatted and feathered. Done in that order your bumper is stronger across the repair than it is beside it.
Bonding is the alternative where the plastic will not weld. A two-part structural adhesive with a reinforcing scrim holds well on the right material and badly on the wrong one, which is why the stamp on the inside face gets read before anything is cut. Welding runs in-house here alongside the metal welding side of the business, which is listed under our services.
Why does a new bumper still need painting
A new bumper arrives in grey primer and has to be colour matched to your car before it goes on, which is why replacement is rarely the cheap option people expect. The part you pay for is only half the job.
Primed bumpers are supplied that way on purpose, because a manufacturer cannot know which of forty colours your car is. So we clean the new part, key it, give it an adhesion promoter, spray it in your colour with flex additive, then lacquer and cure it, exactly as we would a repaired one. The only step you save is the welding.
A matching problem sits on top of the painting problem. Your existing bumper has lived in daylight for years and the colour has moved, while a freshly sprayed panel has not. Without a blend into the wings, a brand new bumper in the correct code can read as a different colour on a bright day, which is exactly the outcome you were trying to avoid. How colour matching and blending work is set out on paint and spray repairs.

What about parking sensors, cameras and radar
Modern bumpers carry parking sensors, cameras, washer jets and sometimes the radar for cruise control and emergency braking, so a bumper job is now an electronics job as well as a plastics one. Anything mounted in or behind your bumper has to come out, go back in the right aperture, and still see what it was aimed at.
Sensors are the routine part. They sit in moulded apertures, your fitter must put them back the same way round, and they cannot be painted over with thick filler or heavy coats, because an ultrasonic sensor reading through extra paint reports obstacles that are not there. You will hear that as random beeping in open car parks.
Radar and forward cameras are the serious part. If your car has adaptive cruise control or automatic emergency braking, the sensor behind the grille or bumper is aimed to a tolerance measured in fractions of a degree, and disturbing it means the aim has to be reset afterwards. Tell any shop quoting for your bumper which driver assistance systems your car has, before the work starts rather than after. How long does a bumper repair take
A scuffed bumper takes one to two days and a split or replaced bumper takes two to four, with paint curing accounting for most of the wait in both cases. Your car does not need to sit here for all of it in every case, and we will tell you when it does.
The sequence is fixed. We remove your bumper, strip the fittings, prepare or weld, fill and flat, prime, cure, colour, blend, lacquer, cure again, then refit and align. Curing is the part nobody can compress. Force it and the finish dies back within weeks, which is the most common complaint about a cheap bumper respray.
Two things add time. A replacement part that has to be ordered in, and damage behind the bumper that only shows once it is off, such as a cracked crash bar, a bent slam panel or a snapped bracket. Both are better found now than discovered by you at an MOT. Timelines across the range of work are in how long an accident repair takes.
What makes one bumper repair cost more than another
Bumper cost is driven by four things: how much has to come off your car, whether the plastic needs welding, how many panels are blended into, and what sits behind the front face. The length of the scrape is not one of them. A long shallow scuff on your plain bumper is simple. A short split on a sensor-laden bumper in a pearl colour is not.
Removal time comes first. Some bumpers come off in twenty minutes. Yours might need the wheel arch liners out, the lamps dropped and the grille released before we reach a single fixing. Then the method: filler and respray, weld and respray, or replace and respray, each one a different number of hours.
Finish is the quiet multiplier. A solid colour is one pass. A metallic needs a blend into the wings. A three-stage pearl needs a blend and a test panel sprayed first to confirm the match. And if the strip down finds a cracked crash bar behind your bumper, that is structural and it is a separate line on the quote, because your crash bar is what protects you next time. Everything that moves a repair figure is explained on what drives a bodywork repair price.

Who pays when somebody else scuffed your bumper
The other driver’s insurance pays for your bumper when you have their details, so your excess and your no claims discount stay untouched. When they drove off and left nothing, you are into either your own policy or your own pocket.
Your bumper takes most of the anonymous damage in Cardiff, because it sits at exactly the height of a car park pillar, a trolley and another car door. A scuffed corner from a tight bay in a multi-storey is the single most common job through these six work bays.
Your written quote is what settles how to pay, once you have compared it against your excess, including the voluntary part people forget they chose. A lot of bumper repairs land under an excess, and claiming for them costs you more over the following years than the repair does today. The evidence to gather after car park damage is set out in car park damage and who pays.

Bumper repair questions we get asked
Is it cheaper to repair a bumper or replace it?
Repair is usually cheaper, because a new bumper has to be bought and then painted anyway. Replacement wins when the mounting tabs are gone or the plastic has shattered, since there is nothing sound left to work with.
Will a repaired bumper crack again in the same place?
Not if it was reinforced from behind. A weld on the visible face alone reopens the first cold morning the bumper flexes. Ask whether the back face was welded and reinforced, and you will learn a lot about the shop.
Can you repair a bumper with parking sensors in it?
Yes. The sensors come out, the repair is done, and they go back in their own apertures. What matters is that paint is not built up over a sensor face, because the extra thickness makes it report obstacles that are not there.
My bumper is scuffed but not cracked. Can it be left?
On a plastic bumper, yes, because plastic does not rust. It is a cosmetic choice rather than a deadline, unlike a scrape through to bare metal on a wing. Trade buyers still price it against you at sale.
Do you need to take the bumper off to repair it?
Almost always. Working on a fitted bumper means masking everything around it, spraying at awkward angles and leaving an edge unpainted where it tucks behind the wing. Off the car it is flatter, cleaner and lasts.
Can a bumper be colour matched if my car is a few years old?
Yes, by reading the existing paint rather than trusting the code alone, then blending into the wings so there is no edge for your eye to find. On a faded car, blending is the whole trick.
